Nonparametric Inference for the Cosmic Microwave Background

چکیده
The Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), which permeates the entire Universe, is the radiation left over from just 390,000 years after the Big Bang. On very large scales, the CMB radiation field is smooth and isotropic, but the existence of structure in the Universe – stars, galaxies, clusters of galaxies, . . . – suggests that the field should fluctuate on smaller scales. Recent observations, from the Cosmic Microwave Background Explorer to the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Project, have strikingly confirmed this prediction.

متن کاملAnisotropic universes with isotropic cosmic microwave background radiation
We show the existence of spatially homogeneous but anisotropic cosmological models whose cosmic microwave background temperature is exactly isotropic at one instant of time but whose rate of expansion is highly anisotropic. The existence of these models shows that the observation of a highly isotropic cosmic microwave background temperature cannot alone be used to infer that the universe is clo...
متن کاملJoint Cosmological Inference from Galaxy Surveys, the Cosmic Microwave Background and the X-ray Background
We discuss cosmological inference from galaxy surveys, the XRay Background (XRB) and the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). We assume a family of Cold Dark Matter (CDM) models in a spatially flat universe with an initially scale-invariant spectrum and a cosmological constant. Joint analysis of the CMB and IRAS resdhift surveys yields as optimal parameters (for fixed Ωbh 2 = 0.024): Ωm = 1 − ΩΛ ...
متن کاملBayesian Inference of Polarized Cosmic Microwave Background Power Spectra from Interferometric Data
Detection of B-mode polarization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation is one of the frontiers of observational cosmology. Because they are an order of magnitude fainter than E-modes, it is quite a challenge to detect B-modes. Having more manageable systematics, interferometers prove to have a substantial advantage over imagers in detecting such faint signals. Here, we present a me...
متن کاملWavelet-Bayesian inference of cosmic strings embedded in the cosmic microwave background
Cosmic strings are a well-motivated extension to the standard cosmological model and could induce a subdominant component in the anisotropies of the cosmic microwave background (CMB), in addition to the standard inflationary component. The detection of strings, while observationally challenging, would provide a direct probe of physics at very high-energy scales. We develop a framework for cosmi...
